Hidden Worldviews is not your average book addressing worldviews. There are no chapters on nihilism, existentialism, or Eastern monism (though a nod is made to The Universe Next Door, and James Sire even writes a blurb for the back of the book, calling Hidden Worldviews 'an excellent compliment' to his own standard work).
Unlike most other writers addressing worldviews, authors Steve Wilkens and Mark L. Sanford deal with what they call 'lived worldviews'. These lived worldviews include such ideas..more

This was a good worldview book. Rather than take the more abstract approach (any worldview assessment book is going to be a bit abstract by necessity), this book strove to look at the way people actually live their lives. So you get postmodern tribalism, consumerism, etc. assessment. I also liked the narrative approach to the Christian worldview that the authors advocated.
read for a class. didn't enjoy at all. too repetitive and complicated.

Very helpful, particularly for preachers who are looking to do cultural or apologetic side bars in their sermons. I thought Wilkens was fair in his appraisal of different worldviews - acknowledging some of the common grace benefits for society and even believers but firmly exposing them as reductionistic and empty.
This book is insightful and beneficial for many reasons but two in particular. First it deals with worldviews that are practical and common not merely abstract. Second, Wilkens does a great job exploring not just the negatives of a worldview but also the strengths which helps create ways of creating common ground with people.
This book does a good job of critiquing major world views or people and identifying positive and negative in these examples. Good critical thinking process to determine what your individual view is and how do you get there.

If you want to understand how to relate with and minister to the Western world, specifically the American culture, this book if for you. It studies the core postmodern worldviews that are evident in everyday life just outside of your doorstep, and, most likely, inside of your own home.

I love how they point out what's good/true about each worldview.
Great book exposing worldviews people don't even realize they have.
This book was a book I had to read for a college course. Despite that, the book was thought provoking and enjoyable.
excellent book on some of the various prevalent worldviews in the west and how they shape our faith undetected. highly recommended

The topic of worldviews addressed in books, journal articles, and university lectures tends to be examined from a predominantly scholastic perspective, which is to say the ideas, ideals, and philosophies behind the dominant worldviews which shape our culture are typically the focus of these studies. Certainly the ideologies and philosophies underlying worldviews are important subjects for examination, after all, what apologetics student has not been warned that ideas have consequences? However,..more
'Hidden Worldviews: Eight Cultural Stories That Shape Our Lives' will help awaken to countless notions that oppose the Christian worldview that are much larger & ferocious than just the standard topics such as agnosticism and atheism.
The book is written practically, with the understanding that many people incorporate aspects of each of these worldviews into life without realizing it. As such, the authors want to help us understand that our worldviews are not something that we choose, like ch..more

This book tackles a ton of topics often left unmentioned or largely ignored in typical Christian worldview analyses. Some of these lesser trod paths include individualism, consumerism, nationalism, and salvation by therapy. The breadth is enormously helpful and worth the price of admission. What's annoying is when Wilkens and Sanford note 'Positive Elements of X' (e.g. moral relativism) and then only counter said false ideology with 'Potential Problems with X'. It's as if they don't believe the..more
A good overview of some popular ways of thinking as well as why it is that those ways aren’t obviously true. But these popular sets of ideas such as naturalism, psychologism, consumerism and individualism aren’t really complete world views. Naturalism is solely a metaphysical view, psychologism is a view of anthropology as is individualism while consumerism involves both anthropological and ethical points of view. Moreover, additional philosophies were not dealt with at all in this book such as..more

This book is unique in that it discussed world views from not only a Christian perspective, but explicitly American Christian outlook, and it also presented world views in a devotional and simplistic way. All in all, an ok book, just not really my style. It is a unique mix between a devotional style book (in my opinion) and a factual book. The goal of the book seems to be aimed at application in the Christians life. Obviously that is a good thing. The author just tends to get a little wordy and..more

Good book. I have a few theological differences with the authors, but overall I found their approach very helpful. Their examination of 'lived' worldviews, where often what we say we believe and our actions differ, was helpful. I was especially challenged in the individualism, nationalism, and postmodern tribalism sections. I liked how each worldview chapter concluded with the strengths of each worldview that we as Christians should consider and then the weaknesses/inconsistencies of each. One e..more
What's my worldview? If I am tempted to spout off something quickly Christian/faith-worded (for that is my basis, my foundation), then this book will give cause to pause. Wilkens and Sanford propose that the church has unknowingly taken on humanistic/secular worldviews such as consumerism, nationalism, individualism, and tribalism that it has become diluted and even deluded. This book can be an eye-opener--especially in these days and times of the worldview of 'nationalism' being confused with '..more
A very helpful guide to understanding today's underlying Worldviews embedded in our American culture. It's formatted like a Christian text book except with bits of the author's personal flair thrown in. Inevitably with a book that covers 8 separate and stand alone chapters it can get dry if you don't find a particular worldview interesting. But overall, I found it educational and worth the investment.

Excellent read that shines a bright light into the 'worldly' mind sets and ideas that have become interwoven with the Christian subculture. The chapters on Individualism, Nationalism, Tribalism and Consumerism are must reads. The worldliness that we have allowed to infiltrate the body of Christ is not so much an issue of music or dress (externals) but we need to refocus on the heart attitude and motivations (inner man) that we have at times put on par with scripture itself.
A very interesting read. Challenging to see how much wordliness has influenced Christianity (myself included). Worth the time to consider, especially the chapters on consummerism, individualism and nationalism.
These world-views are not 'hidden' by any means. Also, it targets a religious audience, shaping all views around said beliefs (which for a Christian is helpful). One exemplary bit of the book was the authors capability of identifying the benefits and negatives of each view. Okay read.
I appreciate the fact that this worldview book analyzed the stories that people face and recognized their difference, rather than simply systematizing it. Each chapter was well organized to glean the good from each worldview and demonstrate their ultimate insufficiency as belief systems.

Good information, but a bit dry.
I highly recommend this book, which discusses eight extremely interesting worldviews intelligently without bogging down in 4th-year philosophy or theology terminology.

Not entirely sure what to say about this book, other than the fact it covers a lot of information in a dense two hundred pages. Very in-depth, somewhat repetitive, but worth the read.

An Introduction To Christian WorldviewAuthor :Tawa J. AndersonISBN :9781783595983 Genre :Religion File Size : 85.50 MB Format :PDF Download :706 Read :908 Everyone has a worldview. A worldview is the lens through which we interpret the cosmos and our lives in it. A worldview answers the big questions of life: What is our nature? What is our world? What is our problem? What is our end? As Anderson, Clark and Naugle point out, our worldview cannot simply be reduced to a series of rational beliefs. We are creatures of story, and the kinds of story we tell reveal important things about our worldview. Part of being a thoughtful Christian is to understand and express the Christian worldview. It also means developing an awareness of the variety of worldviews. An Introduction to Christian Worldview explores answers to questions such as Why do worldviews matter? What characterizes a Christian worldview? How can we analyse and describe a worldview? What are the most common secular and religious worldviews? Well organized, clearly written and featuring aids for learning, An Introduction to Christian Worldview is the essential text for either the classroom or personal study. ‘Readily accessible . . . a valuable resource for all Christians who desire a deeper understanding of the conceptual foundations of our faith.’ Steve Wilkens, Professor of Philosophy and Ethics, Azusa Pacific University Muslim Worldviews And Everyday LivesAuthor :El-Sayed el-AswadISBN :9780759121195 Genre :Religion File Size : 54.34 MB Format :PDF, Docs Download :216 Read :701 The book is critical to understanding Muslim worldviews today, providing an analysis of ethno-cosmology, emic interpretation of sacred tradition, and crucial insight into modernity, folklore, geography, dreams, imagination, hybridity, and identity transformation. Magnificent SurrenderAuthor :Roger HellandISBN :9781621891468 Genre :Religion File Size : 38.68 MB Format :PDF, ePub Download : ![]() Read :246 God's kingdom is our true home, but we've picked up a habit of resisting it. And when, finally, we do fall in, most of us find we've survived so long outside his kingdom that we've lost all instinct for thriving in it. That's where Roger Helland meets us. Roger has thought long and studied hard on these matters. He has pondered deeply what it means to be fully alive in Christ and for Christ, and he's tested his insights in classrooms, in churches, with denominations, but mostly in his own life. In Magnificent Surrender, he's distilled what he's learned into a field guide for kingdom living. But Roger draws from an even deeper source. His book derives its force and depth from Paul's letter to the Colossians. Indeed, Magnificent Surrender is an extended pastoral reflection on and application of that letter. Colossians, in four brief chapters, presents the glory of Jesus Christ and the glory of a life wholly submitted to him. It is a manifesto of the rich life. Magnificent Surrender heralds that brilliantly. It's a wise, loving, and sometimes stern invitation to read Colossians again, with fresh eyes and fierce resolve. It's also a challenge to take to heart its promise and its exhortation--that we can and must live in, through, with, and for Christ, who is all and in all, supreme and sufficient. -Mark Buchanan, from the Foreword Living At The CrossroadsAuthor :Michael W. The book tells the story of Western culture from the classical period to postmodernity. The authors then provide an analysis of how Christians live in the tension that exists at the intersection of the biblical and cultural stories, exploring the important implications in key areas of life, such as education, scholarship, economics, politics, and church.
